Foil shavers without a central cutter are designed for facial hair up to around 1.5 mm. Models with a central cutter can handle hair up to around 3 mm, as the central cutter shortens longer hairs before the foils shave them closer. For longer beard growth, trim the hair down first before using the foil shaver.

Replacement is recommended when shaving performance begins to decline, the shaver requires noticeably more passes, or the foil becomes worn or damaged. Replacement intervals depend on how frequently the shaver is used and maintained.

Remove loose hair from the foil and cutter area after use. Waterproof models can be rinsed as specified for that model, while non-waterproof models should be cleaned using the supplied brush or another dry cleaning method. Keeping the foil and cutters free from trapped hair and residue helps maintain consistent shaving performance.

The central cutter is designed to capture and shorten hairs that are too long to enter the foils efficiently. The surrounding foils then shave the remaining shorter hair closer to the skin. This makes a Dual Foil + Central Cutter system more suitable when facial hair has been allowed to grow slightly longer between shaves.

The difference is mainly how much shaving area is working against the skin at the same time.

With a single foil, one shaving surface cuts the hair as you move the shaver across the face. For example, shaving a cheek may require several overlapping passes to cover the entire area.

A dual foil uses two shaving surfaces side by side. During the same stroke, both foils are working across the skin, covering a wider area and giving more opportunity to capture hairs that may have been missed by the first foil.

A triple foil adds a third shaving surface, increasing the contact area further. On larger areas such as the cheeks or neck, this allows more hair to be captured across each pass and can reduce the amount of repeated movement needed over the same area.
